The edge of Doom? I wonder what Shakespeare meant in this sonnet..

Sonnet CXVI
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments, love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O No! it is an ever-fixed mark,
T hat looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand’ring bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come,
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ or no man ever loved.
William Shakespeare, 1564-1616

In any case I love Shakespeare's Sonnets!

hey
(found you on yahoo answers, just so you know)
You just picked out my favourite sonnet by Shakespeare!!!!!
I think he meant... that real love lasts forever. not always just couple love, true minds are people alike that understand each other.
real love is unmoveable, it doesn't chamge because time does... it's unchangeble like God only is. and the spirit. but it isn't material, because all that is material is doomed to perish. The star, in the poem, we can measure it's height (in the skies he means) but it's worth, no, that can't be measured... we cannot understand love, and think then, this love we don't understand, that is only real. I guess we live in a scary world, and what might we still believe that everlasting love exists... everything around us proves it isn't so... (i myself have seen it more than enough). But that is just because true love is rare. just like diomedes, the guy who went through Atens with a lamp in the middle of the day to find a human being, so should we search for love. and the guy had big trouble finding a real human being, how could it be that we would find that kind of love at the corner of every street? it is no vulgar, though is it rare. the edge of Doom... might profetic Shakespeare have meant even our age ;) i think he thought about death. Love lasts even beyond death. otherwise why would we even been living?

Thanks Monica for the comment, but still I think the Edge of Doom is probably the blue event horizon where even light can not escape from the gravitational pull of a Black Hole - in other words "Time Stops" and to an independent observer from the earth one would be visible as a person perched at the same spot till the end of time - and in my opinion it would be rather boring to be perched there till eternity !! So it is better to live in dreams - if you go to my April posts on my blog www.demoninlove.blogspot.com you will get an inkling of what will happen when you wake up from your dream!

that's a very cool theory :)
but did Shakespeare know about black holes :s ???
anyway it's really a mystical poem i think... it's so unlike all the other sonnets!!!

greetings

ps: I really like your poems :)

Monica - you made even a demoninlove@yahoo.com smile (wherever that yahoo is)- and I agree Shakespeare would not have known about Black Holes in space - they used to think that space was filled with a hypothetical thing called Ether in those days, which could explain the dual nature of light. But I am sure Shakespeare intrinsically knew about the dual nature of mankind, and that the brains of this world are in Womankind - Portia is an example, -so dont get lost in the search for that eternity thing in the ethos of the ether of space - me being a part of mankind and being without brains, will - as they say in the army - "Carry on Regardless", like they did when the Light Brigade Charged.
Have a great day and thanks for liking my silly poems

haha!!! You have a (nice) very strange way of thinking! I don't think men are brainless (at least I hope so ;) ) but I surely agree Shakespeare set a point with Portia (so it is :) )

And your poems are not silly at all, they are beautiful, the world needs more people like you, busy with the beauty of life, and with thinking about it, instead of all that's going around (here in the WEst especially) only busy with eating, sleeping, working... and that's it. they drive me absolutely crazy. I'm glad that I came across someone like you on the internet :) people of valour are really rare, especially on the internet :)

you too have a nice day (probably it's still night in India :p)

bye

Thanks Monica and dont spoil me - it may go to my head - nice thinking does not make a demoninlove nice -
And Monica
It is not night here when it is 4 AM where you are.
In fact it is about 5.30 in the evening here at that time and the
night has not even been born! And since you said -
"You too have a nice day" and with the next breath you
said "It must still be night in India" - you have also
joined the legions of the "Confuse Deepak Brigade" Ha HA!
